Terms of Use
Last updated 4 October 2026
The short version. ClariTip tells you what a business pays its staff, what the wage law where you are actually requires, and what that means for your tip. We show the source behind every figure. We are often working from incomplete public information, we say so on the page when we are, and we will correct anything we get wrong. None of it is legal, financial, or employment advice, and what you tip is your decision.
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and ClariTip, operated as a sole proprietorship by Brett Loren Johnstun (“ClariTip”, “we”, “us”). They cover the ClariTip app and website. By using ClariTip you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use it.
1. What ClariTip is
ClariTip is a consumer information service. For a given business and a given state, it reports three separate things and keeps them separate on purpose:
- Wage law — the minimum wage, the tipped cash wage, and the tip credit a jurisdiction permits. This comes from government sources.
- Compensation information — what a business appears to pay, drawn from sources we name, each carrying a confidence score that reflects how strong that evidence is.
- Tip guidance — our own editorial view of whether a tip is filling a legal gap in someone's wages or adding to a wage that already stands on its own. This is opinion. It is labelled as ours and carries no confidence score, because an opinion is not a fact with a percentage attached.
2. What ClariTip is not
ClariTip is not legal advice, financial advice, tax advice, or employment advice, and using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind. Wage law is state and local, it changes, and how it applies to a particular worker at a particular business on a particular day can turn on facts we do not have. If a legal question matters to you — as an employee, as an employer, or as anyone else — talk to a lawyer in your jurisdiction.
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or speaking for any business named in the app. We name businesses because the information is about them. Business names belong to their owners and appear here only to identify who a claim concerns.
ClariTip does not tell you what to tip. It tells you what we could find out, and leaves the decision where it belongs.
3. Where our information comes from, and its limits
Every factual claim in ClariTip is stored with the source it came from and the date it was recorded. That is the design of the thing. It is also why we can be specific about the limits:
- Figures are as of a date. A wage recorded in March may not be the wage paid in November. The evidence view shows you when each claim was recorded.
- Some figures are estimates, not disclosures. Where a number is modelled by a third party from job postings rather than published by the employer, we say so on the page. It is an indication of a range, not a statement of what anyone is paid.
- Most reporting is brand-level. A franchised location may pay differently from a corporate one, and two locations of the same brand may differ from each other. Unless a claim is scoped to a place, do not read it as one.
- Confidence means what it says. A low score is us telling you the evidence is thin, not us hedging. Where we have nothing, we say “not on file” rather than guessing.
- Absence of a claim is not a claim. That we have no wage on file for a business says nothing about that business.
We make no warranty that any figure is current, complete, or correct, and you should not treat ClariTip as the only input into a decision that matters to you.
4. If we have something wrong
Anyone may tell us a claim is wrong — a customer, a worker, or the business itself — and we will look at it. Every claim on a business page has a Report link beside it, which is the quickest route because it tells us exactly which assertion you mean. You will be asked which of five things is wrong: the figure is factually wrong; it was right and is now out of date; it belongs to a different business or location; it concerns a franchisee rather than the corporate entity; or the source does not say what we recorded. That last one is the one we treat as most urgent, because it is the only one where the mistake is straightforwardly ours.
We ask for evidence, and we mean it. A report has to point at something we can open and check — a link, or a document you attach. Every figure we publish carries a source, and a claim that one of those figures is wrong is held to the same standard. If what you have does not fit that, write to disputes@claritip.app instead and tell us what you can.
5. What you may and may not do here
You may use ClariTip for your own purposes, including commercial ones, and you may quote or cite what it says. That means what you do with an answer — looking up a brand, quoting a figure, acting on what you read. It does not mean taking the collection itself, which is the first item below. Please do not:
- extract the database in bulk — by scraping, automated querying, or otherwise — or redistribute a substantial part of it as a dataset or a competing service;
- present our figures as something other than what they are, strip the confidence and sourcing from them, or attribute to us a claim we did not make;
- use ClariTip to harass a business or a worker;
- interfere with the service, probe it for vulnerabilities, or try to reach data the app does not expose to you;
- submit anything to us that you do not have the right to share, including information given to you in confidence by an employer.
If you send us information — a correction, or a report about a business — you give us permission to use it, including publishing what it establishes as a sourced claim. We publish the claim, not you: contributor identity is kept apart from published claims and is not shown to readers. See the Privacy Policy for how that separation is enforced.
A document you attach is not published. We open it, check the claim against it, and delete it when the dispute is settled. It is never shown to another reader and never becomes part of the public record — what may become public is the corrected claim, and a note saying what we found. Please send only what is needed to settle the point: if a document carries other people's names or pay and does not need to, redact it or send us the part that matters.
6. Accounts
ClariTip works without an account, and the core of it always will — what a business pays, what the law requires, and what that means for your tip will not move behind a sign-in.
We intend to offer optional accounts, and later a paid subscription for things that are genuinely extra rather than currently free. Neither exists yet. When they do we will post terms covering them, and covering what a subscription changes about the advertising, before either opens.
7. Advertising
ClariTip carries advertising, served by Google. It is how ClariTip is paid for and it is why it is free to use. Wherever you are reading this — in a web browser, or in the app from an app store — there are ads. Ads are labelled, and they sit outside the evidence: never inside the list of what we found about a business, and never above a confidence score.
An advertiser has no influence over anything ClariTip publishes. Nobody can pay to raise a confidence score, soften a wage figure, add a favourable claim, remove an unfavourable one, or be left out of the database. Buying an ad buys space on a page. It buys nothing about what the page says, and there is no arrangement under which it could.
An ad is not an endorsement in either direction. We are not recommending the advertiser, and the advertiser is not vouching for us.
One limit worth stating rather than leaving you to discover: we do not choose which advertiser appears on which page. Google's auction does. So a business we publish a wage claim about could buy advertising that ends up beside it. If you see that, it means the auction put it there. It does not mean the figure was negotiated, and under the paragraph above it could not have been.
If you believe an ad here is misleading or inappropriate, tell us at hello@claritip.app and we will block it. We can remove advertisers; we cannot review every ad before it runs.
8. Availability and changes
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of ClariTip, and we may add or remove businesses, claims, and jurisdictions as the underlying evidence changes. The service is provided as it is; we do not promise it will be available without interruption.
9. Disclaimer
ClariTip is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, ClariTip will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenues, or data, arising out of your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim relating to ClariTip will not exceed one hundred US dollars (US$100) or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, whichever is greater. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, in which case they apply to you only as far as that jurisdiction permits.
11. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify ClariTip against claims arising from your misuse of the service, your breach of these terms, or content you submit to us.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute arising from them will be brought in the state or federal courts located there, subject to any rights you have under the consumer protection law of the place you live.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do, we will change the date at the top, and for a change that materially affects you we will say so in the app. Continuing to use ClariTip after a change means you accept the updated terms.
